RE: The tariff classification of a steel screw from Great Britain.

Dear Ms. McCabe:

This is in response to your request, on behalf of your client NACCO Materials Handling Group, for a tariff classification ruling, dated October 23, 1995. The sample you have submitted which you refer to as a banjo bolt is a steel screw with a hexagonal head and a shank which has threads on its bottom half and a horizontal hole through its upper half. The shank is hollow from the horizontal hole down to the bottom of the shank. The shank is hollow so that brake fluid can flow through it. You state that this item is inserted into the master cylinder of a brake and controls the flow of fluids. The provision applicable to the submitted banjo bolt will be subheading 7318.15.8060, Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTS), which provides for Screws, bolts, nuts coach screws, screw hooks, rivets, cotters, cotter pins, washers... and similar articles, of iron or steel: Threaded articles: Other screws and bolts: Having shanks or threads with a diameter of 6mm or more: Other: Other: With hexagonal heads. The rate of duty is 9.3 percent ad valorem. This ruling is being issued under the provisions of Section 177 of the Customs Regulations (19 C.F.R. 177).

A copy of this ruling letter should be attached to the entry documents filed at the time this merchandise is imported. If you have any questions regarding the ruling, contact National Import Specialist John Fitzgerald at 212-466-5492.
