RE: The tariff classification of Dihydroergotamine (CAS-511-12-6) in bulk form, from Italy

Dear Mr. Tartaro:

In your letter dated December 29, 2010, you requested a tariff classification ruling.

The subject product, Dihydroergotamine, is an ergot alkaloid. It is an a-adrenergic blocker with selective venoconstrictor properties. It also binds to serotonin receptors. It is prescribed for the treatment of migraine and vascular headache.

The applicable subheading for the Dihydroergotamine in bulk form will be 2939.69.0000, Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTSUS), which provides for “Vegetable alkaloids, natural or reproduced by synthesis, and their salts, ethers, esters, and other derivatives: Alkaloids of rye ergot and their derivatives; salts thereof: Other.” The rate of duty will be free.
