RE: The tariff classification of an HDMI cable from China

Dear Mr. Yeh:

In your letter dated July 27, 2011, you requested a tariff classification ruling.

The merchandise concerned is a high definition multimedia interface cable (HDMI cable). This particular cable incorporates 24k gold plated connectors on each end; a type A connector on one end and a type D connector on the opposite end. The submitted literature states that this cable is UL20276 certified, triple shielded, has a 4 mm diameter, is RoHS, CE, UL, FCC, HDMI compliant, and is available in 3.2, 6.5 or 9.8 foot lengths.

This cable is used to connect a cell phone, and/or other HDMI type D compatible devices to an HDMI supported TV or display.

The applicable subheading for the high definition multimedia interface cable (HDMI cable) will be 8544.42.2000, Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTSUS), which provides for “Insulated wire, cable…: Other electric conductors, for a voltage not exceeding 1,000 V: Fitted with connectors: Other: Of a kind used for telecommunications”. The rate of duty will be Free.

This ruling is being issued under the provisions of Part 177 of the Customs Regulations (19 C.F.R. 177).
