RE: The tariff classification of Trimeprazine Tartrate (CAS-4330-99-8), imported in bulk form, from Ireland; and
Scopolamine Hydrobromide (CAS-6533-68-2), imported in bulk
form, from Germany
Dear Ms. von Doehren:
In your letter dated January 11, 1998, you requested a
tariff classification ruling.
The first product, Trimeprazine Tartrate, is indicated for
use as an antipruritic drug. We note that the international
nonproprietary name ("INN") for Trimeprazine Tartrate is
"Alememazine", which is listed in Table 1 to the Pharmaceutical
Appendix to the Tariff Schedule.
The second product, Scopolamine Hydrobromide, is a
derivative (salt) of Scopolamine, a naturally occurring alkaloid.
It is indicated for use as an anticholinergic (ophthalmic) drug.
The applicable subheading for Trimeprazine Tartrate,
imported in bulk form, will be 2934.30.2700, Harmonized Tariff
Schedule of the United States (HTS), which provides for: "Nucleic
acids and their salts; other heterocyclic compounds: Compounds
containing a phenothiazine ring-system (whether or not
hydrogenated), not further fused: Other: Drugs: Other." Pursuant
to General Note 13, HTS, the rate of duty will be free.
The applicable HTS subheading for Scopolamine Hydrobromide,
imported in bulk form, will be 2939.90.5000, HTS, which provides
for: "Vegetable alkaloids, natural or reproduced by synthesis,
and their salts, ethers, esters, and other derivatives: Other:
Other." The rate of duty will be free.
This merchandise may be subject to the requirements of the
Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, which is administered by
the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. You may contact them at
