RE: The tariff classification of a motor vehicle hollow screw from Germany.
Dear Mr. Resetar:
In your letter dated April 3, 2000, you requested a tariff classification ruling.
You describe your submitted sample, part number 928 105 476 00, as a motor vehicle hollow screw. You state that it is a socket head screw made of stainless steel, which is 25 mm in length and has a threaded shaft that is 8 mm in diameter. The screw’s shaft is hollow and there are two holes at the top of the shaft, immediately below the head. The item has a dual function of attaching an oil feed line to a timing chain tensioner, while also acting as a conduit for the oil to be directed into the chain tensioner and eventually onto the timing chain. All of the parts mentioned are for motor vehicle internal engine components.
The applicable subheading for the motor vehicle hollow screw will be 7318.15.8030, Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTS), which provides for screws, bolts, nuts, coach screws, screw hooks, rivets, cotters, cotter pins, washers, (including spring washers) and similar articles of iron or steel: threaded articles: other screws and bolts, whether or not with their nuts or washers: having shanks or threads with a diameter of 6 mm or more: other: socket screws: of stainless steel. The general duty rate will be 8.5% ad valorem.
This ruling is being issued under the provisions of Part 177 of the Customs Regulations (19 C.F.R. 177).
A copy of this ruling or the control number indicated above should be provided with the entry documents filed at the time this merchandise is imported. If you have any questions regarding the ruling, contact National Import Specialist Kathy Campanelli at 212-637-7025.
